I believe this is the beginning of meaningful dialogue; openminded discussion and the cultivation of a significantly enhanced Harmony Place. We're on the upswing! Thanks Bob, for the terific website

Great website in such a short time. Great photos and all!

Would like to see more outreach to residents. Seems top heavy with town officials and merchants, and the neighbors are unaware of its existence. Can this be fixed, since the committees are all set and so's the agenda, or is the parade stepping off without the locals?

You're right! We need to get the word out about our association and the website. We had 25 hits to the site on Tuesday and 75 hits yesterday, so it's catching on.

Theresa Maggio (Tego) is writing a press release on the website and our association to be published in the Reformer, Observer, etc., and the site is already listed on iBrattleboro.

I'd also like to do window posters for the merchants and flyers to get slipped under doors around town. Any volunteers? Call me at 579-6625 or email bobviens@gmail.com

We're waiting for the OK to dress up the ticket machines too. Here's my idea... http://vermontharmony.googlepages.com/meter.jpg/meter-full.jpg

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Loved the design of the sticker on the parking ticket machine.
Can't warm up to the idea of a surveillance camera yet. That would just move the wrong people to other spaces, and then we'd have to have cameras everywhere. I believe constant camera surveillance would freak out many people who hang in the lot peacefully.
I am sending Reiki to Harmony Lot.

Glad to see you are looking into the history of Harmony lot. The Brattleboro Historical Society had a few old pix and Reformer articles on it.
I have been trying to find out if Harmony Place was named after a person named Harmony, or if it was named for the virtue that helps us all get along. Anyone know?

I am so happy to see such a big response to what were merely ideas in my head that i thought nothing could be done about. IT CAN!! i know winter is coming and some of the problems will go away, but i think we should still meet, plan, and have activities. I will be there for Gallery walk.

Great time last night; Dora, Kick Mullen and I are going tonight. We'll be by Frankie's around 8, come join us!

My daughter had a great experience in the parking lot yesterday afternoon. She is the one who has been telling me how bad it has gotten, and i kept sticking up for the kids. she has been harrassed all summer parking here, and gave it right back to them. i worried for her. yesterday she went to her car and about 5 young men were around it. Her adrenaline shot up thinking she would have another confrontation. A cruiser pulled up and asked them to move along. they gave him lip, but moved. My daughter went to the officer and thanked him, told him she realized how short of officers they are. Gave him a great big Atta Boy. I do too.

I just posted the SanFran link on the Photos and Video Page http://vermontharmony.googlepages.com/photosandvideos . Deanna, thanks for relating your daughter's story. Any encouragement that we can provide to anyone helping the cause is much needed. BTW, I'm buying a Nerf football to have handy the next time someones using a real football. Maybe the $5 gift will send a good and lasting message.

The last thing we need is cameras. I will vehemently oppose any surveillance cameras plan.

I gotta say, the lot's been very quiet since we and the police have been sitting out there. And people are randomly sitting out, not just at the "official" times. Maybe with regular presence, and the season's change, we've got it solved- for now.

Anonymous said...

I'm with you on the camera idea. What we need is more neighbors getting involve in Harmony. That, more than anything, will transform this space.

Anonymous said...

I like the chess table idea.
re: the arch. The one pictured is kind of over-glorious. But it shows a pride of place. A home-made version might be good. Maybe the town could tap into the talent of the artisans at the Tinderbox.

deannna said...

I read on ibrattleboro link tego question of how it got it's name and history. just recently, witin the last 30 day i think, the reformer did a piece on the Harmony Bar. i asked at one of our meetings how long it has been a hangout, and was told since "Alices Restaruant" was there in 60's or 70's. My daughter is of the disco era and she said then they hit bars around the lot. BUT, she says "we wanted to keep a low profile and not have police or anyone know us and we were polite."

I am a harmony rat, the kind that hang out in the lot with nothing to do but wait and see if anything happens. I've read a lot of interestin stuff on this page, but i have to say that not many have; i didn't even know about it until today. But i've noticed that a few reporters frequent the site and i would like to say something to all of them. In the last few months there has been quite a bit of unease about Harmony and the Harmony rats. Contrary to popular oppinion, this upsets us greatly.
We do what we can for the community, and one of those things is keeping the violent, disrespectful kids in line. Over the past 3 years I have seen a large number of "hard" drug dealers and their "runners" attempt to edge their way into the community through the lot. They never quite succeed, and much if not all of the credit for that goes to the continuing efforts of the rats to "Keep it cool". We don't want crack and smack in our town, and we make that known. In several cases we have physically prevented younger or less experienced people from getting into something both stupid and dangerous. it may seem that Harmony lot is a central hub for drugs, but in truth we keep anything more dangerous than pot and the occasional hallucinogens out, by force if need be. Our methods and ideas may seem offbeat to the rest of Brattleboro, but even if we get no credit for this, please stop blaming us when coke or heroine finds its way here despite our best efforts.

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous, Would you be willing to form a rats group or committee that we could discuss our ideas with? We need your input! A lot of us want the rats back in Harmony.

Reve said...

Bring back the rats! The Harmony rats are what inspired me to start shooting a documentary there back in June. They, you, make me smile, make me feel good just by seeing you there.
Then in late summer bad things started to happen and I am trying to document that too, and now the people's reaction to the bad things, and how they are trying so hard to reclaim Harmony.
I hope the movie ends with the rats' reconquest of the lot and things getting back to happy and normal.

Anonymous said...

I hope the rats will tell us how to help them.

Can any of you come to the Dialogue meeting at Coffee Country on tuesday at 4? I want to help you get the Harmony back for yourselves.

Friday Gallery walk, was very nice, I commend Common Bakery for the music & samples of bread. I have never tasted real bread. If i have any gripes about Brattleboro, it is that everything costs. Not at the Literary Festival nor this wonderful folk music. But, i look in paper at many things i would like to attend & there are either no senior prices, or it just out of my budget. i dont want to plead poverty, but guess i am. our local bus has no senior fare. well, i guess that is for a different organization. But i do like the things we are doing NOW. benches would be a good thing. but maybe with a sign, like on some buses, "Please give your seat to Senior."

I'm moving some of my old posts to clean up the blog. This one's from October 3rd.--->
Last night while handing out cards promoting the website and picking up some trash, I took a chance and got into some conversations with people that I had previously avoided. The lot regulars come in all shapes and sizes, and everyone I talked to last night, with the exception of the three people that were too freaked out to even accept a card from me, were very interested in making Harmony the best place possible, many of them had very specific ideas for improvements, even the scary ones. One of them suggested erecting small chess table areas on the median strips. They all said they'd check out the website. I'll post any comments as they come in.

Maybe instead of just being intimidated and affraid, we should make the effort to engage anyone in our neighborhood that might have a different perspective on things. That's one way that positive change happens.

~Bob Viens said...

I'm moving a few of the posts to better organize the blog. This one's from September 29th.--->I'm sitting here above Harmony enjoying the soothing sound of the street sweeper. Ahhh...clean...

It was a relatively quite night last night. Yesterday, LA posted a thought on iBrattleboro about sitting out (you can see her comments here). I did make it out and had a great conversation with Laura about getting people out of their apartments. The Harmony should to be a place where everyone feels invited, accepted, and safe.

Last night there was a group of guys throwing a football around in the center of the lot, with little regard for the steady stream of cars trying to pass through. To me, this is a perfect example of the lack of options within the downtown where throwing a football isn't necessarily a bad idea. But where? What about a basketball court or skate park? I know these are old questions, maybe we can have some say in the matter... ~B

Klangen Farben said...

My biggest problem with the organization is the meeting time. I live atop Metropolis, which plays music until 2am every Friday night(not a problem IMHO). Demanding I turn up for a community meeting at 9am on a Saturday is effectively saying "We're having a party and you're not invited".

Late in part 2 of the video of the community meeting, one woman notes that the hackeysackers are not present. Asking youth to attend a 9am Saturday meeting is again a bridge too far.

Otherwise I appreciate the efforts, though I have yet to experience the problems articulated in the YouTube videos.

Well somehow I've missed two meetings that I honestly tried to get to. Gets me to the issue of momentum. We don't want to loose it! I think it's important to take on projects that can be accomplished. Deanna has some great ideas that seem very doable (if that'a word). There are some very talented and motivated people involved here. BaBB is willing to support this effort in any way we can. I will certainly keep the BaBB Board informed and engaged. Things get done because people who are impacted want to do something. We need as many people who care as we can find. Thanks so much to Bob who's leadership is simply amazing. All of you reading this should really consider what you might be willing to take on and do. Think about how Harmony might look and feel with some effort. It could be so much more than parking!

deanna said...

i think, and this is by attending all committee meetings held so far, that policing & policing resouces could join into one. And that activites and Youth dialoug as one. Ideas in both seem to overlap. The beautifcation committe could continue on it's own with the association of BaBB or become part of Activites & Youts. Steamlineing and not overlapping seems a good idea.

~Bob Viens said...

Hi Deanna,

Could you say more about this?

~B

deanna said...

i feel like last nights dialoue with youth meeting was one of the best. but a lot of the ideas submitted were activites in the lot, so maybe activites & dialoug coule be one group. about the policing, one is for resources and one is for policing that sounds so the same. beautification could be it's own thing working with BaBB or joining activites & youth. It would streamline things and maybe make it easier for more people to come to meetings. Th youth services lady, Allison i believe, had some great thoughts and has an event already in the works for youth Oct 25th. Officer Di Marino rocks!!

In response to Bob's proposal on committee structure I'd like to suggest the followiong. First great work Bob! Your leadership is truly inspirational. This community needs many more like you! That being said, as I have already mentioned, there is good momentum and we don't want to over-meeting folks and kill the moment, so to speak. Keeping it simple with the committee structure is very realistic and as such I love it! What I like about the proposal is support for the two subcommittee structure with overview and direction coming from a Steering Committee made up of representatives of the two committees. I like the focus of the two committees, the first "building community" being focused on the people side of the space, activities, dialog, talking to folks in and around the area and the second, "defining Public Space', focused on the physical space itself. To me this makes tremendous sense in terms of the focus of the work and getting things done, as well as in terms of recruitment. Different folks may have different types of interest and aptitude. I think the category of Youth Advisors is important and that a flexible forum of informal, ongoing discussion and dialog is a realistic solution to ongoing youth involvement. My experience is that traditional committee work is an adult model that does not successfully lend itself to the life style of younger people. I would certainly encourage and invite participation in the two committees by people of any age however....obviously. Finally just a couple of things....I would pull "making Harmony safe" out of the Building Community committee task or structure list and include it in a vision that guides the effort. It occurs to me that "Harmony as a safe public space nestled in the heart of downtown Brattleboro that promotes neighborhood, community and that is a visual accounting of Brattleboro as a uniquely thriving social, economic and cultural center" might be a nice vision.....okay, okay I know that's a bit much! Keep up the great work everyone!

Since we cannot have an ordinance for loitering or crowds, could we perhaps have one for large crowds after midnight. we wouldnt offend any gallery walkers that way. but in all fairness, most of us living above the parking lot are not on subsidys, we work, pay rent and need to sleep to be able to work and pay rent.

deanna said...

walking thru the parking lot headed to latchis at 1:45. young man with blond girlfriend, went up to couple (tourist looking)walking next to me and told them he was from Keene and had no gas to get back, could they give him some money. He looked local to me. and did not ask me or my friend for help. Just a behavior i had yet to see in Brattleboro. Panhandling.

why is the town manager and the head of the selectboard on the steering committee? isn't this a NEIGHBORHOOD association? i hope this doesnt end up sucking because the town is running it. when are the next meetings anyway? i'm worried

Anonymous said...

oh yeah, the website rocks!

deanna said...

Hi Anonymous from 10/13, I agree with you. This is a Neighborhood Association. I am not saying at all that the police dept or Selectboard dont have their own very important ideas on this, but I think some people who live, around here dont come, 'cause it is too offical. The Police Dept has really rallied and you can see it most times in Harmony Place. But I think for the Police and Select board, it is a politcal process and that can take time. We the people are able to just do it. On that note, please come to Halloween Costume Party in Harmony 4:30-6:30 on Halloween night. No politics just fun, and prizes and candy. As soon as i have permission as to what part of lot to use, i will post a flyer on site. We will have people from as far away as Vernon coming.

The history of the current initiative -- while working as General Manager of the Brattleboro Music Center in 1991-92, I proposed a world music festival for Brattleboro. Part of the vision was to re-vamp Harmony Lot as 'Harmony Plaza', and have it become a people place, and a place for the arts, rather than a place for parking automobiles. I reiterated this vision while working with the Windham Arts Council in the mid-1990s, and with what became the Brattleboro Arts Initiative. I was part of the committees which rejected the idea of building a new fine arts center off in the woods somewhere, and converting the Brattleboro downtown into a fine arts center instead! One idea, for supporting outdoor concerts, etc., is to carve an ampitheater out of the lot, with seats facing east to a stage backed up by the old Galanes store. Another, perhaps more immediately do-able vision, is to close the outer parking spaces near stores in order to create areas for sidewalk tables and chairs, in the style of Paris' left bank. Maybe eventually we will have a combination of open-air cafe space and green space? In any case, I continue to propose 'Harmony Plaza', a place that is amenable to people rather than machines. The thing is ours, and we are in the process of re-claiming it. 'When the people lead, the leaders will follow'. They will have to!

Congratulations to Bob and everyone who is contributing to this community challenge.
I would like to suggest an idea:

Remove only the 8 or so parking spaces at the Eliot street entrance to Harmony. Expand the bordering sidewalks, adding tables, chairs, shrubs, etc.
This new entranceway would be attractive and inviting and the expanded sidewalks would welcome more community members.

Enjoy the day,

Hi All,

I just posted a bunch of new stuff. Does anyone know of any meetings? I'd like to get more work done with the Beautification Committee, but I think we need more people involved in it. Any takers?

at first i was going to leave this as annon. i am on here too much, but i belive in what we are doing. this is simply a personal story. i have lived in my apt almost one year. my right next door, neighbors are "the redheads".One is on our video site.At New Years, they came over with their phone # to say if too noisy, please let them know. I have never had a noise, traffic problem with them. Past few weeks I have had some problems with myself, managing to get into my apt with all my belongings. Blame age, too much going on in life, forgetfulness, whatever. But my neighbors always knock on my door when i have left my keys in the door (often) and in past 2 weeks i have left my handmade cane outside. the young peope knock on my door to remind me. Tonight i told him "Opps I did it agian" but thank God for the youth, your neighbors and once we know each other it will be harder to feel as strangers. thanx bro

You know, the newest addition to the photos and video section is a myspace account, referencing a musical group with a song called "Viva la Harmony". It is quite sweet until you look close and see that it is owned by a couple of kids not old enough to shave calling themselves, "40 oz freedom fighters. I will not leave it unsaid that the 40 oz in question are a reference to beer. Combine this with the references to "pyschedelics",(sic) a picture of a gun totting bandit and well, this pretty much sums up the state of the problem.

Re: second town forum....Nov. 17 , Sat. at 11 a.m. is good for me, but I am not a member. However I would like to cover the meeting.

Anonymous said...

I thought for a couple of days about david's comment on the 40 oz band. This is not a justification for a beer band, but it made me think back to other songs and lyrics. "she messed around with a bloke named Smokey. she loved him though he was Coke-y" Minnie the Moocher 1930's. We of a certain generation certainly know of "one pill makes you larger, one pill makes you small" or the Stones song
Mother's little Helper. Cracklin rose by Neil Diamond a song about wine. Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, and Jackson Brown all did the Cocaine songs. "I took a shot of Cocaine and shot my woman down." Needle and Spoon by Lynard Skynard. Even today "I'll never smoke weed with Willie again" Toby Keith. I am not saying it's right, just an observation.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUATE EVENTS.
I am still trying to make the parking lot prettier. All the business' are doing a good job decorating. I do have a gripe that I have been stewing on since last meeting.Nov. 17th. My daughter parked in High st lot to come to the meeting. She parked in a reserved spot. Not on purpose, just didnt see it. she got a $20 ticket and thought that fair. but the business owner in that lot, came out screaming, yelling, called her white trash, told her that she had "gone thru her truck" and then held on to the truck window as my daughter tried to drive off. 2nd unfortuate event. Another business person, was talking before the meeting began, and was overheard by a Brooks house resident, to say how she cannot handle the drunks coming out of Brooks house. My daughter was right behind her and heard too. guess my point is the owners want our business, but these 2 incidents certainly have turned off some of us. A Customer Service rule. A person who has a bad experience at a business will tell 10 people. then those 10 will also tell 10. I've told more than 10.
